Understanding Your Broadband Contract: What to Watch Out For

Price rises, exit fees, automatic renewals — broadband contracts are full of traps. Here's what to read before you sign anything.

Broadband contracts from large providers can run to dozens of pages. Most people sign them without reading them — and then get caught out by something buried in the small print. Here's what to look for before you commit.

Annual price rises

This is the big one. Most major UK providers (BT, Sky, Virgin Media, EE) include clauses allowing them to raise prices annually — often by CPI + 3.9% or RPI + 3.9%. In 2024, this meant rises of 7–8%. Ofcom has ruled that providers must now be clearer about this upfront, but it's still common practice.

What to check: Does the contract quote a fixed price for the term, or does it allow mid-contract rises?

Exit fees

If you cancel before the end of your contract, most providers charge an early termination fee (ETF) — often the remaining months of the contract value.

What to check: What's the exact calculation for ETF? Is there a cooling-off period after signing?

Automatic renewal

Many contracts automatically roll to a rolling monthly contract (often at a higher price) when the initial term ends. Providers are supposed to notify you before this happens, but it's easy to miss.

What to check: When does the contract end? What notice do you need to give to avoid auto-renewal?

Mid-contract changes

Some providers reserve the right to change the terms of your contract (including service levels) with notice. If they do, you may have the right to exit penalty-free — but only within a specific window.

What to check: What rights do you have if the service changes materially during the contract?

How we do things at Precious Broadband

Our 24-month contract is straightforward: the price you sign up for is the price you pay, with an annual rise of £1–£1.50 (less than half of what major providers charge). No hidden fees. No surprise renewals. We'll always tell you in advance about any change.

If you want to talk through what our contract actually says before signing, just ask. We'd rather explain it up front than have you surprised later.

Talk to us about our plans.
